Guided Reading and Literacy Ideas
for Home Learning
Reading Tasks:
Please record your chosen task in your home learning book.
- Summarize your reader in five or six sentences.
- Write down any words you don't know the meaning of in your reader. Look up their meaning in the dictionary and write them in a new sentence.
- Find all the adjectives in your reader (describing words) and write them down. Choose one word and write a new describing sentence.
- Write all of the synonyms and antonyms you know for adjectives in your reader.
- Look at your sight word list. Find and list the sight words found in your reader.
- Write down all of the words in your reader that have a short vowel sound. (a,e,i,o,u)
- Write down any words you can find with a long vowel sound. (ay, a_e, ea, ee, e_e etc)
- Predict what might happen when you are about halfway through a book. Write your prediction in the form of a story plan in boxes.
- Make a list of words you don't understand the meaning of and clarify their meaning with a dictionary.
- Draw and label a character in the book using adjectives.
- Make a list of all of the nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns in your book.
- Re-tell your story and include information about the characters.
- Write a character study of your favorite character from your book: write about their appearance but also their personality.
- Find all the words in your book which have the digraphs 'ch,sh, th' etc.
- Write about what a character might be thinking or feeling at different stages of the story. You could write it in the first person, or in a speech bubble.
- Write about a memory or experience of your own that is similar to something you've read in your book. Eg: The book Three Friends Together reminds me of the time my brother left me out of a game. This is similiar to the story when Slippy the Seal didn't let Wally the Whale play.
- Write about another text that this book reminds you of. eg: This book Wally the Whale is similiar to the movie Antartica as both texts have Whales in them. OR This book Wally the Whale reminds me of the book Three Friends Together as the main characters in both books feel left out.
- Record yourself reading your reader. Listen to the recording and try to improve on it. Can you read smoothly, only taking a breath when there is a full stop or comma? Can you change the tone of your voice when someone is speaking? (Look for quotation marks to help you).
Spelling Tasks:
- Practice reading and writing sight words. Can you put them in a sentence? Write four or five of your sentences down. Don't forget you need a capital letter and full stop.
- Choose 10-15 words to break into sounds. eg: home= h/o/me
- Choose one word to do a word study on. Write 5-10 facts about this word. Eg: Brother.
- It starts with the letter B.
- It has two vowels o and e.
- It can be broken into two syllables bro/ther
- It has four sounds br/o/th/er
- It is a noun.
- Write down all of the synonms for your word or words that we could use instead of this one in our writing. Eg: Said= yelled, whispered, stated, screamed.
- Word build on your sight words eg: play= played, playing
- Visit our spelling city page. Play some of the assigned Core List Year 2 tasks.
Other Literacy Tasks:
These tasks can be completed in addition to your
Reading and Spelling tasks not instead of.
- Visit our studyladder page and play an assigned task.
- Play one of the apps listed at the bottom of this page. Write about what you learnt.
- Write a recount. Make sure it includes an orientation (when it happened, where you went,who was there, what you did, why you went), a series of events first, next, after, finally) and a conclusion (how the day ended and how you felt).
- Write a description of a family member. Remember to use adjectives to make your writing more interesting.
- Write a personal response on a story of your choosing. How did the story make you feel? What did you like/dislike about the story? What would you change?
- Write about a special friend. What makes this friend so special? What good qualities of friendship do they possess? What do you like doing together?
Suggested Applications for IPad's
Below is a list of Apps that we have used or plan on using in class. They are all free!! Some will try and get you to upgrade. You do not need to buy any upgrades. Please note that your child should always be supervised when playing these apps. It is also recommended that you turn location services off on your ipad or iphone. When updating an app please ensure that the content is still appropriate for your child. Just because it was appropriate before the update doesn't mean it still is now. Apps change their content quite regularly so you should also be checking them regularly.
