We love to read with our Year 1 friends each day!

Why not try a few of these activities at home?

 Reading Tasks:
  • Summarise your reader in two or three sentences.
  • Write down any words you don't know the meaning of in your reader. Look up their meaning in the dictionary and write them in a new sentence.
  • Find all the adjectives in your reader (describing words) and write them down. Choose one word and write a new describing sentence.
  • Look at your sight word list. Find and list the sight words found in your reader.
  • Write down all of the words in your reader that have a short vowel sound. (a,e,i,o,u)
  • Write down any words you can find with a long vowel sound. (ay, a_e, ea, ee, e_e etc)
  • Predict what might happen when you are about halfway through a book. Write your prediction in the form of a story plan in boxes.
  • Make a list of words you don't understand the meaning of and clarify their meaning with a dictionary.
  • Draw and label a character in the book using adjectives.
  • Write about what a character might be thinking or feeling at different stages of the story. You could write it in the first person, or in a speech bubble.
  • Write about a memory or experience of your own that is similar to something you've read in your book. Eg: The book Three Friends Together reminds me of the time my brother left me out of a game. This is similiar to the story when Slippy the Seal didn't let Wally the Whale play.
  • Write about another text that this book reminds you of. eg: This book Wally the Whale is similiar to the movie Antartica as both texts have Whales in them. OR This book Wally the Whale reminds me of the book Three Friends Together as the main characters in both books feel left out.
  • Record yourself reading your reader. Listen to the recording and try to improve on it. Can you read smoothly, only taking a breath when there is a full stop or comma? Can you change the tone of your voice when someone is speaking? (Look for quotation marks to help you).
Spelling Tasks:
Practice reading and writing sight words. Can you put them in a sentence? Write one or two of your sentences down. Don't forget you need a capital letter and full stop.
  • Choose 5 words to break into sounds. eg: home= h/o/me
  • Choose one word to do a word study on. Write 5 facts about this word. Eg: Brother.
  1. It starts with the letter B.
  2. It has two vowels o and e.
  3. It can be broken into two syllables bro/ther
  4. It has four sounds br/o/th/er
  5. It is a noun.
